About the position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for the Jack and Sheryl Morris Cancer Center is a pivotal role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the center in collaboration with the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of RWJUH and the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Oncology Administration. This position is crucial in ensuring that the center delivers exceptional patient care while adhering to the highest standards of quality and safety. The CAO will work closely with clinical leaders to implement evidence-based practices and innovative treatments that enhance patient-centric approaches. In addition to managing the operational aspects of the Cancer Center, the CAO will lead a culture of innovation and continuous improvement, aligning the center's goals with the broader missions of teaching, research, and service. The role requires a strategic mindset to drive performance through system-thinking and creativity, focusing on improving quality metrics, employee engagement, and patient care services. The CAO will also be instrumental in elevating RWJUH Oncology Services/Rutgers Cancer Center into the Top 50 Cancer Programs in the Nation by 2031, supporting the vision for honor roll status in US News & World Report. The CAO will oversee capital requirements, manage budgets, and ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. This includes analyzing audit reports, improving departmental operations, and coordinating inter-departmental activities. The position demands strong leadership skills to cultivate relationships across various levels of the organization, ensuring that the Cancer Center operates effectively within the academic medical enterprise and the Oncology Service Line at RWJBH. The CAO will compile performance reports for the CEO, President, COO, and SVP of Oncology Services, ensuring transparency and accountability in operations.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the delivery of exceptional patient care by collaborating with clinical leaders to implement evidence-based practices and innovative treatments.
  • Ensure patient-centric approaches and the highest quality and safety standards in clinical care.
  • Lead a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement to advance cancer patient care in alignment with the Cancer Institute's missions.
  • Drive greater performance through system-thinking and creativity to create the ideal patient experience by continuously improving quality metrics, employee engagement, and patient care services.
  • Work collaboratively with the executive team to elevate RWJUH Oncology Services/Rutgers Cancer Center into the Top 50 Cancer Programs in the Nation by 2031.
  • Oversee the Cancer Center's capital requirements, excluding Radiation Oncology.
  • Establish and navigate a network of relationships with RWJUH leadership, Rutgers University, and the Oncology Service line.
  • Devise strategies and policies to meet hospital, health system, and service line goals in collaboration with top-level executives.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of various departments, including finance, sales, HR, and marketing.
  • Manage budgets, hiring, contracting, and business negotiations.
  • Analyze audit reports and formulate improvements to departmental workings.
  • Improve quality, discharge home, patient satisfaction, and other identified metrics.
  • Achieve and exceed benchmarks for length of stay and re-admissions.
  • Coordinate inter-departmental activities and delegate responsibilities to subordinates.
  • Compile performance reports for the CEO, President, COO, and SVP of Oncology Services and board of directors.
  • Ensure compliance with IRS laws, government regulations, and SEC rules.

Requirements

  • Master's degree required, preferably MBA with in-depth knowledge of healthcare financials and market analyses.
  • 7-10 years of progressive Hospital Operations experience in an academic medical center environment.
  • A minimum of ten years of successful progressive healthcare/facility management experience, preferably in Oncology Services.
  • Demonstrable record of significant career progression culminating in a senior management position as either a Chief Administrative Officer, Senior Operations Officer, or Chief Operating Officer in a financially sound healthcare system.
  • High level, complex problem-solving abilities in both group and one-on-one situations.
  • Ability to translate the mission and vision to everyday work.
  • Ability to manage and lead in a matrixed organization.
  • Ability to cultivate and foster relationships at every level of the organization.
