About the position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) at the Committee for Public Counsel Services (CPCS) plays a crucial role in providing strategic advice and support to the Chief Counsel in managing the agency's daily operations. This position is integral to ensuring the agency's mission of advocating for equal justice and human dignity is met through effective management and operational efficiency. The CAO will oversee various projects, implement policies, and coordinate with legal and operational staff to achieve CPCS goals while fostering a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Responsibilities

  • Overseeing and supporting agency operations, coordinating projects, and facilitating the creation and adoption of new policies and procedures.
  • Overseeing agency projects and the Training Department, which includes training in various legal practice areas.
  • Managing the Private Attorney Outreach Partners to recruit private attorneys for CPCS panels.
  • Implementing the agency Staffing Plan, coordinating with HR on position postings and offers, and tracking salary funding availability.
  • Supporting the development and implementation of strategic plans and agency goals.
  • Overseeing crisis management and communication efforts.
  • Facilitating and implementing directives from the Chief Counsel, providing guidance to senior leaders.
  • Performing other duties as requested or required.

Requirements

  • Be a member in good standing of the Massachusetts bar with at least 7 years of legal experience or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and skills.
  • 5 or more years of management experience supervising staff and/or operational units.
  • Access to a personal computer with home internet access sufficient to work remotely.
  • More than 7 years' experience representing indigent clients in one or more CPCS practice areas.
  • Extensive knowledge of CPCS legal and operational systems.
  • Demonstrated experience managing large scale projects and teams.
  • Experience developing and delivering training.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead teams and colleagues positively and professionally.
