About the position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) at Working America plays a pivotal role in overseeing the day-to-day administrative operations of the organization. This position encompasses a wide range of responsibilities, including human resources, accounting, payroll, labor-management relations, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards. The CAO is expected to be a strategic and meticulous leader who collaborates effectively with various departments to maintain efficient and effective administrative operations. The ideal candidate will possess exceptional organizational and communication skills, thrive in a fast-paced environment, and demonstrate the ability to adapt quickly to changing circumstances. A proven track record in implementing administrative strategies and initiatives is essential for success in this role. In addition to managing the daily administrative functions, the CAO will contribute to the strategic planning and goal-setting of the organization in collaboration with senior management. This includes overseeing the operations of Working America's headquarters and field offices, ensuring smooth workflow and office upkeep, and managing support services such as mail and custodial operations. The CAO will also be responsible for managing the Human Resources operations, which includes hiring and supervising staff, providing expertise on HR principles, and developing organizational policies. Furthermore, the CAO will administer compliance with personnel and benefit provisions of collective bargaining agreements and serve as a representative in interactions with collective bargaining units. The role also involves managing the accounting and payroll functions of the organization, including budget development, financial record maintenance, and ensuring fiscal success. The CAO will oversee compliance with charitable registration, lobbying, campaign finance, and other government disclosure requirements, as well as lead the negotiation of contracts with vendors and manage leases and business contracts. This position requires a high level of discretion, excellent attention to detail, and the ability to work long and irregular hours as necessary.

Responsibilities

  • Direct Working America's daily administrative functions, ensuring efficiency and smooth workflow throughout the organization.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, direction, and goal-setting of the organization in collaboration with senior management.
  • Assume principal oversight of the operation of Working America's headquarters and field offices, including office upkeep, mail services, communication, and custodial operations.
  • Manage the Human Resources operations of the organization, including hiring and supervising staff and consultants.
  • Provide expertise on HR principles, including navigating state laws and compensation rules.
  • Develop and implement organizational policies and administer compliance with collective bargaining agreements.
  • Serve as a representative for interactions with collective bargaining units and negotiate labor contracts.
  • Manage the accounting and bookkeeping functions of the organization, including hiring and supervising staff and consultants.
  • Work with accountants to develop departmental budgets, approve purchases, and maintain financial records.
  • Administer compliance with charitable registration, lobbying, campaign finance, and other government disclosure requirements.
  • Direct the negotiation of contracts with vendors and manage procurement of assets.
  • Lead the management of all leases and business contracts.

Requirements

  • 10+ years' related advanced work experience in human resources, accounting, labor-management relations, and/or legal and regulatory compliance.
  • Familiarity with lobbying and campaign finance disclosure and compliance required.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct complex analysis of data and forecast the impact of proposed projects.
  • Proactive leadership to identify and recommend solutions.
  • Skills in negotiating cost-effective contracts for goods and services.
  • Ability to translate complex organizational data into clear messages for a wide range of audiences.
  • Excellent organizational skills, attention to detail, and time management.
  • Ability to exercise a high level of discretion.
  • Ability to work long and irregular hours as necessary.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with managing staff in a collectively-bargained environment preferred.
