About the position

The Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) at Kaiser Permanente is the highest level administrative executive responsible for leading a designated Service Area or Regional scope. The CAO collaborates with the Area Medical Director and Senior Vice President to develop business and clinical strategies, oversee operations in both ambulatory and select inpatient settings, and ensure high-quality care delivery. This role involves managing human resources, financial performance, and operational plans while fostering effective partnerships and a culture of excellence and innovation within the organization.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with the Area Medical Director and Senior VP, Area Manager.
  • Make decisions on resource allocation to support medical center and regional strategies.
  • Lead the organization through changes while integrating diverse viewpoints.
  • Support operational implementation of strategic priorities.
  • Promote and operationalize the Labor Management Partnership.
  • Develop vision and strategy for the Medical Center as part of the leadership team.
  • Establish implementation plans for business strategies to achieve objectives.
  • Manage day-to-day operations and priorities.
  • Build a team accountable for achieving mission and financial objectives.
  • Create a culture of trust and engagement among stakeholders.
  • Maintain open communication channels and foster information sharing.
  • Develop strategies that differentiate KP in service and clinical experience.
  • Ensure integration of quality, service, and efficiency improvements into operations.
  • Establish goals and objectives with timely follow-through.
  • Implement policies ensuring compliance with regulations.
  • Mentor and develop direct reports emphasizing teamwork and collaboration.
  • Lead programs to improve performance and manage costs while enhancing patient care quality.
  • Achieve or exceed performance expectations in medical center operations.
  • Support caregivers and enhance job satisfaction through a positive environment.
  • Direct HR strategies for recruitment, retention, and development of key personnel.
  • Manage operating and capital budgets for the medical center.
  • Stay informed on current Health Care and Public Policy.
  • Support Medical Center physicians in partnership with the AMD.
  • Represent KP and SCPMG in the local community through direct engagement.
  • Resolve legal and HR issues in partnership with HR.

Requirements

  • Minimum ten (10) years experience in managing a complex organization through transitions in technology or business.
  • Minimum five (5) years experience as a senior leader in an integrated health care delivery system.
  • Demonstrated success in operations improvement and cost-management initiatives.
  • Extensive financial planning and management skills.
  • Ability to balance strategic development with day-to-day operations.
  • Demonstrated skills in team building and organizational development.
  • Excellent communication skills for formal and informal settings.
  • Strong problem-solving and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to impact outcomes using influencing skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively in a multi-entity partnership environment.
  • Experience managing with physicians who have joint accountability.
  • Thorough understanding of the health care industry and physician relationships.
