About the position

The Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney plays a crucial role in the legal system by authorizing warrants, negotiating pleas, and preparing misdemeanor criminal cases for court. This position involves conducting court appearances, assisting in felony and juvenile cases, and managing office operations in the absence of the Prosecuting Attorney. The role requires a strong understanding of legal standards and the ability to work collaboratively with law enforcement and other legal professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Authorizes requests for warrants in accordance with legal standards.
  • Negotiates pleas and sentencing recommendations with attorneys and defendants.
  • Researches and prepares misdemeanor criminal cases for court proceedings.
  • Conducts court appearances for misdemeanor arraignments, motions, and trials.
  • Assists in prosecuting felony, juvenile, and probate cases.
  • Drafts motions, briefs, and other legal documents.
  • Oversees and manages office operations in the absence of the Prosecuting Attorney.
  • Works cooperatively with law enforcement to ensure proper investigation and reporting of cases.
  • Researches and interprets legal issues.

Requirements

  • Completion of a law degree from an accredited law school.
  • Current license to practice law from the State of Michigan.
  • At least one year of related experience in preparing cases and conducting trials.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Advanced communication and interpersonal skills.
