About the position

The Chief Compliance Officer (CCO) at the University of North Texas System is responsible for leading a comprehensive compliance program across System Administration and coordinating with campus compliance programs. The CCO provides guidance to senior management on compliance matters, monitors compliance performance, conducts investigations, and develops policies and procedures to ensure adherence to regulations. This role is pivotal in fostering a positive compliance culture and maintaining the institution's reputation.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and update the compliance program, including policies, procedures, standards, training, and communication.
  • Implement and operate retaliation-free reporting channels, including an anonymous hotline.
  • Conduct an annual, formalized risk assessment to assist in developing an annual work plan.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the compliance program, using various tools and metrics, and report on the results to senior management and the board of directors.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate compliance risks, issues, and gaps, ensuring corrective actions are taken promptly.
  • Provide regular updates to the Board of Regents regarding the maturity of the compliance function.
  • Provide leadership and direction to the compliance staff, fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • In collaboration with the Office of General Counsel, provide expert advice on compliance matters to senior management and staff.
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders, responding to inquiries in a timely manner.
  • Conduct or oversee investigations and reviews related to compliance issues.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in law, business, finance, accounting, or related field.
  • 10 years of experience in compliance, risk management, audit, or legal roles, preferably in a large and complex organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of industry relevant compliance laws, regulations, best practices, and industry standards.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Knowledge of tools and methods for monitoring and evaluating compliance performance.
  • Knowledge of compliance program development, implementation, and management principles.
  • Skill in providing expert advice on compliance matters to senior management and staff.
  • Skill in conducting or overseeing compliance investigations and audits.
  • Ability to adapt to changing compliance requirements.
