About the position

The Chief Compliance Officer at Stephen F. Austin State University is a managerial role responsible for directing and managing a comprehensive compliance program that adheres to applicable laws, regulations, and university policies. This position requires independent judgment and initiative, overseeing compliance risk assessments, coordinating compliance committee meetings, and ensuring effective compliance training across the university. The Chief Compliance Officer reports directly to the Senior Vice President for Organizational Effectiveness.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees the university compliance risk assessment process and manages the preparation of a comprehensive risk-based compliance plan.
  • Coordinates and facilitates compliance committee meetings, preparing reports on compliance initiatives and recommending improvements.
  • Oversees compliance in high-risk areas and assists in developing risk mitigation compliance plans.
  • Directs and continuously evaluates an effective compliance program for the university.
  • Participates in the review and revision of university policies and procedures to mitigate risk.
  • Collaborates with university departments to address compliance issues and consults with legal counsel as needed.
  • Maintains and updates the standards of conduct for university management and employees.
  • Maintains the university's confidential reporting mechanism for suspected non-compliance.
  • Hires, supervises, trains, and evaluates assigned staff.
  • Reports on compliance activities to The University of Texas System compliance officer as requested.
  • Monitors developments in statutes and regulations impacting compliance areas and provides guidance on compliance vulnerabilities.
  • Coordinates the evaluation of outside activity requests and prepares management plans as needed.
  • Oversees the development and maintenance of compliance training for employees and monitors completion.
  • Develops and delivers compliance-specific training to new employees and university departments.
  • Serves as a compliance delegate on multiple university committees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field is required.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience in a regulatory, legal, and/or compliance-related capacity in healthcare, business, or university environment is required.
  • Experience dealing with federal and state regulations and designing compliance monitoring procedures is required.
  • Supervisory and management experience is required.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a related field or Juris Doctor is preferred.
  • Compliance/ethics certification or professional certification/licensure in a related field is preferred.
