About the position

The Chief Design Technology Officer (CDTO) at SOM is responsible for enhancing the design capabilities of architects and engineers through innovative design technology tools and workflows. This role focuses on optimizing design processes, fostering collaboration, and empowering a community of designers. The CDTO will work closely with the CIO to deliver comprehensive technology services that align with the firm's objectives and drive competitive advantages in the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry.

Responsibilities

  • Expand architects' and engineers' design capabilities through design technology tools and workflows.
  • Provide a design-thinking strategy to optimize design processes through automation and data management.
  • Lead development of data strategies for design and business insights.
  • Define the firm's design technological direction and stay updated with emerging trends.
  • Oversee talent management within the Design Technology practice, including supervision and recruitment.
  • Establish priorities for investment in Design Technology resources and monitor ROI.
  • Lead the delivery of complex design technology projects and evaluate available software solutions.
  • Organize in-house advisory councils to assess software effectiveness and explore new service types.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 15 years experience in architectural and/or engineering design, development, documentation, and detailing.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field; professional licensure preferred.
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge of architectural and/or engineering practices and software programming.
  • Proven ability to develop financial models of ROI for proposed technology.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, AutoCAD, and coding languages such as Python, C#, and Javascript.
