About the position

The Chief Digital Assets Strategist at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is responsible for developing and leading the implementation of a strategic vision for software engineering and data management within the Strategic Energy Analysis and Decision Sciences (SEADS) directorate. This role aims to enhance the external impact of NREL's research by innovating the approach to software and data, ensuring high-quality analyses, and improving access to digital products. The strategist will collaborate with technical staff and senior leadership to foster a software culture that supports the organization's goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategy development and execution for SEADS digital assets.
  • Create best practices to improve planning, budgeting, training, hiring, and staffing.
  • Establish goals and guidelines for the software development lifecycle, including CI/CD, code reviews, and testing.
  • Review new modeling and tool development approaches for consistency with SEADS digital strategy.
  • Guide, gather, and present impact metrics across the data and tools landscape for SEADS.
  • Identify new business lines that support direct funding for software products.
  • Maintain compliance with NREL's SQA procedure and software terms and conditions.
  • Coordinate computing and development resource needs such as access to VM/cloud/workstation resources, CI/CD infrastructure, and task tracking software.
  • Serve as primary liaison between research and NREL's Information Technology Services (ITS) team.
  • Stay abreast of industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in digital asset management.

Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field and 9 years of experience, or a Master's degree with 12 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 14 years of experience for Level V.
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field and 15 years of experience, or a Master's degree with 18 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 20 years of experience for Level VI.
  • Deep knowledge of advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts.
  • Demonstrated management of complex and/or impactful projects.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, and collaboration skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Proven experience in digital strategy development and virtual asset management.
  • Strong software domain expertise with problem-solving capabilities.
  • Broad understanding of SEADS' strategic goals and key digital capabilities.
  • Experience leading teams and managing coordinated software development efforts.
  • Proficiency with GitHub, pull requests, issue tracking, and version control best practices.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles as they apply to digital assets.
