About the position

Serves as Chief Engineer aboard a diesel propelled vessel (65 feet and over) up to 4000 horsepower and traveling on up to near coastal routes. Responsible for the safe operation of all shipboard engineering systems.

Responsibilities

• Operates diesel engines, electric generators or capstan engines, emergency plant and other auxiliary power engines.
• Maintains systems to propel, maneuver, and maintain vessel that also involves hydraulic systems, pumps, winch, lights, heating plant, etcetera.
• Keeps constant check on temperature, oil pressure, fresh water, and other operational issues that ensure correct pressures, proper regulation and operation, and to foresee need of repair and maintenance of equipment.
• Performs repair and maintenance of equipment and machinery in connection with engine room with exception of repairs requiring machine-work or major shipyard work.
• Oversees all machinery and equipment is properly oiled and greased.
• Inspects machinery and engine rooms when repairs necessitate plant to go to shipyard, or when U.S. Coast Guard and/or American Bureau of Shipping inspections are required.

Requirements

• Possession of a current, valid United States Coast Guard Merchant Marine Credential of Designated Duty Engineer of Vessels Less Than 500 Gross Tons/4000 HP/3000 kW.
• Possession of a valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC).
• Ability to do the work of a Chief Engineer Diesel to provide production support services.
• Experience in keeping constant check on temperature, oil pressure, fresh water, etc., to ensure correct pressures, proper regulation, and operation.
• Ability to foresee need of repair and maintenance of equipment; and requisition materials, supplies, and repair parts.
