About the position

The Chief Engineer at the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL) is responsible for managing the maintenance and operation of the library's physical plant, including mechanical, HVAC, electrical, elevator, fire protection, and plumbing systems. This role involves leading the maintenance team, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for patrons and staff, and staying updated with building management technologies and compliance. The Chief Engineer will also be a key point of contact for emergencies and will develop long-term strategic goals for the Facilities Operations team.

Responsibilities

  • Assures proper operation, maintenance, and service of all equipment and systems.
  • Ensures the technical correction and completion of work contracted to outside vendors.
  • Performs all required inspections and rounds as outlined by the department.
  • Maintains logs for equipment, service, temperature, flows, consumption, as required.
  • Operates, repairs, and maintains all chillers, air compressors, generators, motors, pumps, cooling towers, etc.
  • Monitors and coordinates activities of other refrigerating system operating engineers assigned to the building.
  • Operates and maintains cooling tower, including water treatment, testing, and record keeping.
  • Trains and supervises all maintenance staff responsible for the maintenance of the physical plant and related equipment.
  • Schedules rotating shifts and work assignments, monitors performance, orders materials and supplies, prioritizes tasks, and maintains logs of periodic maintenance and emergency situations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from a vocational or technical high school supplemented by advanced courses in plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or refrigeration skills; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Must possess a valid Refrigerating System Operating Engineer (Q-01), issued by the NYC Fire Department.
  • Substantial supervisory experience in building trades in a collectively bargained environment and in the operation and maintenance of large scale heating, air conditioning, elevator, electrical, and plumbing systems.
  • Strong technical background in HVAC, plumbing, and electrical systems.
  • Ability to manage a team and supervise building engineers.
