About the position

The Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer serves as a vital administrative officer for the Office of General Counsel (OGC) at Georgia Tech. This role is pivotal in overseeing the ethics and compliance workstream, acting as a consultative collaborator across the institution. The Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer will manage various functions, including conflicts of interest, export control, youth programs, and the ethics hotline, while leading Institute-wide compliance training and communication efforts. This position supports, coordinates, and assists University-wide compliance efforts concerning all federal, state, and local laws, as well as internal and external policies. The officer will work closely with the General Counsel, Deputy General Counsels, the Chief Privacy Officer, OGC team members, University System of Georgia (USG) leaders, campus leaders, and business partners to plan, direct, and manage department staff and initiatives that support the Institute's mission. In this role, the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer will serve as a trusted internal advisor to the General Counsel on matters handled by the OGC, including investigations, conflicts of interest, and program administration. They will monitor the performance of compliance efforts and related activities continuously, taking appropriate steps to improve effectiveness. The officer will develop, review, update, and communicate institutional compliance efforts to ensure they remain relevant and provide guidance to management, employees, and other key stakeholders. Additionally, they will ensure independent reviews and evaluations are conducted for compliance issues or concerns within the colleges, campuses, or units, ensuring they are appropriately evaluated, investigated, and resolved. The Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer will also identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk, developing and implementing corrective action plans to resolve issues and provide guidance on avoiding or addressing similar situations in the future. They will respond to alleged violations of rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and standards of conduct by evaluating or recommending the initiation of investigative procedures, directing and managing the Institute's Ethics Hotline, and reporting any violations or potential violations to duly authorized enforcement agencies as appropriate. This role includes the day-to-day management of the Office of Ethics & Compliance, overseeing training, communications, programs, policies, and investigations, while managing and supervising the work of team members. Furthermore, the Chief Ethics and Compliance Officer will lead transformational projects defined in conjunction with other parts of OGC or the Institute, supporting the planning, execution, and allocation of resources needed to run these projects. They will drive the execution of strategic plan priorities while maintaining high ethical standards and fostering strong relationships within the Institute and with external constituents. This position is essential for ensuring that Georgia Tech remains a leader in ethical behavior and compliance within the higher education landscape.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a trusted internal advisor to the General Counsel on matters handled by the OGC, including investigations, conflicts of interest, and program administration.

  • Develop, review, update, and communicate institutional compliance efforts to ensure continuing currency and relevance in providing guidance to management, employees, and other key stakeholders.
  • Ensure independent reviews and evaluations are conducted for compliance issues or concerns within the colleges, campuses, or units and are being appropriately evaluated, investigated, and resolved.
  • Identify potential areas of vulnerability and risk; develop and implement corrective action plans to resolve issues and provide guidance on avoiding or addressing similar situations in the future.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP).
  • 10 years experience in ethics and compliance leadership roles within a large corporate, governmental, or higher education setting.
