About the position

The Chief Financial & Administrative Officer (CFAO) at The Lemelson Foundation will lead and manage all financial, administrative, and operational aspects of the organization. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the CFAO will ensure that the Foundation's financial practices are efficient and aligned with its mission of promoting impactful invention. This role encompasses oversight of the Foundation's substantial assets and budget, while fostering a collaborative and values-driven culture.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all financial, administrative, and operational aspects of the Foundation.
  • Conduct finance and operations analysis to support strategic decision-making.
  • Oversee accounting, financial planning, tax filings, investment oversight, and grants management.
  • Supervise a cross-cutting team including IT, human resources, facilities management, and communications.
  • Provide guidance on policies and procedures, contract administration, and legal matters.
  • Ensure financial practices support the Foundation's mission and sustainability.

Requirements

  • Expertise in financial and strategic planning, accounting, and nonprofit administration.
  • Experience in organizational growth strategies and effective human resource management.
  • Ability to navigate the demands of a small foundation and manage both strategic and hands-on tasks.
  • Strong work ethic and commitment to clear goals and measurable outcomes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in philanthropic organizations or similar sectors.
  • Familiarity with Program-Related Investments (PRIs).
