About the position

The Chief Financial and Administrative Officer (CFAO) at the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) is a strategic leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial and administrative operations of the museum. The CFAO will manage an $11 million operating budget, develop financial forecasts, and ensure the cost-effectiveness of the museum's programs and events. This position plays a critical role in supporting MoMath's expansion plans and enhancing its financial sustainability while leading a team of finance and operations professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead business and financial management for MoMath, including bookkeeping, accounting, payroll, and contract administration.
  • Develop, assess, and actively monitor annual budgets and financial forecasts.
  • Create a five- to eight-year financial forecast for the anticipated new museum space.
  • Analyze and evaluate MoMath's events, programs, and business strategies for cost-effectiveness.
  • Oversee regular bookkeeping operations, including accounts payable and receivable, invoices, and bank deposits.
  • Partner with the auditing firm to support the creation of Form 990 and the annual audit process.
  • Manage general museum administration, including internal logistics and customer communications.
  • Prepare reports for the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Engage and partner with external stakeholders, including landlords, bankers, and auditors.

Requirements

  • Proven experience in financial management and administration, preferably in a nonprofit or museum setting.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to develop and monitor budgets and forecasts.
  • Experience in bookkeeping and accounting practices, including grant and fund accounting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage with various stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead and manage a team effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with capital campaign accounting and reporting.
  • Familiarity with nonprofit financial regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of pricing strategies for events and programs.
