About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at the University of Washington (UW) is a pivotal leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial and accounting programs of the institution. The CFO will lead efforts to enhance cybersecurity and enterprise risk management while fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making. This position requires collaboration with various stakeholders across the university to ensure financial stability and accountability, aligning financial strategies with the university's mission and values, particularly in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership for planning, developing, directing, and running a reliable financial and accounting program.
  • Build a data and reporting culture and infrastructure at the UW.
  • Collaborate with multiple leaders and decentralized IT units to enhance financial operations.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive financial program encompassing fund management, accounting, operational forecasting, and compliance.
  • Engage with various stakeholders including UW Bothell, UW Tacoma, UW Seattle, and UW Medicine to align financial strategies with institutional goals.
  • Model and promote organizational diversity, equity, and inclusion competencies in all aspects of work.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10 years of experience in a leadership role within finance, accounting, or budgeting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing and executing multi-year financial plans for complex organizations.
  • Understanding of generally accepted accounting principles and experience in promoting fiscal accountability and transparency.
  • Exceptional leadership qualities and ability to support organizational values.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills to articulate complex ideas persuasively.
  • Proven experience with data analysis and distilling complex datasets into actionable insights.
  • Commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and accessibility.

Nice-to-haves

  • Over 10 years of experience in finance, accounting, or a related field.
  • Supervisory experience managing teams of 10-15 or more.
  • Experience working in public higher education or with firms serving higher education institutions.
