About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) position is a pivotal role within a leading New England Construction company based in Portland, Maine. This well-established firm consistently ranks highly on the Top ENR lists and has garnered multiple awards for its excellence in the construction sector. The CFO will be responsible for managing the entire Accounting and Finance function, partnering closely with Executive Leadership to create and oversee the annual financial strategic goals of the business. This role requires a strong leader who can foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning within the finance team. In this position, the CFO will lead the annual budgeting process and establish key strategic financial goals that align with the company's long-term vision and objectives. The role involves developing accounting talent and building a high-performing finance team, which includes hiring and training staff. The CFO will also manage external relationships with CPA/Tax firms, regulatory bodies, and compliance entities, ensuring that all financial audits, federal and state tax filings, and joint ventures are handled efficiently. The CFO will work closely with the Operations Team to establish, manage, and report on financial results, key performance indicators (KPIs), and other strategic initiatives. This includes a thorough analysis of the company's revenues, expenses, investments, and programs, providing actionable business recommendations to the Executive Leadership team. Additionally, the CFO will implement risk management practices to safeguard the financial health and profitability of the organization, ensuring that financial reports are completed accurately and promptly on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. Guidance on capital expenditures and investments will also be a critical aspect of this role.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the annual budgeting process and establish key strategic financial goals.
  • Manage the Accounting and Finance team, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Develop accounting talent and build a high-performing finance team, including hiring and training.
  • Manage external relationships with CPA/Tax firms, regulatory bodies, and compliance entities.
  • Implement structured working capital management.
  • Establish, manage, and report financial results, KPIs, metrics, and other strategic initiatives in collaboration with the Operations Team.
  • Analyze and ensure the company's revenues, expenses, investments, and programs are thoroughly understood by the Executive Leadership team, making subsequent business recommendations.
  • Identify cost efficiencies and implement risk management practices to protect the financial health and profitability of the organization.
  • Complete financial reports on a weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual basis with accuracy and speed.
  • Provide guidance on capital expenditures and investments.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a Business-related degree.
  • MBA, Master's Degree in Finance, or CPA preferred but not essential.
  • 10 - 15+ years of Executive Finance Leadership experience, particularly in the Construction Industry.
  • Experience with ERP systems such as Timberline/Sage 300, Procore, or similar.
  • Demonstrated track record of team development and leadership.
  • Strong strategic planning and executive communication skills.
