About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS) is responsible for developing and implementing long-term financial strategies, overseeing budget management, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. This role is crucial in safeguarding the agency's financial health and supporting its mission to enhance public safety in New Mexico. The CFO will lead a dynamic administrative support team, engage with various stakeholders, and play a vital role in policy development and strategic planning.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure the organization's $180 million budget is used lawfully and efficiently in compliance with all legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and internal controls for accounting, general ledger, and grant reporting.
  • Lead the coordination of required annual audits, acting as the liaison between external auditors and internal staff.
  • Oversee the work of management staff within each Bureau by setting and directing performance evaluation expectations.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in any field from an accredited college or university.
  • Eight (8) years of professional level experience with a strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead the response team during both external and internal financial audits.
  • Proven experience managing a complex, multi-revenue budget totaling $221 million.
  • Deep understanding of financial standards including GAAP, GASB, and GAO guidelines.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification to serve as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as specified in Section 2.20.5.8 of the New Mexico Administrative Code (NMAC).
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to oversee and evaluate the performance of management staff.
