About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) role at CLA focuses on providing comprehensive accounting services to clients, particularly in the nonprofit sector. This position is integral to the Client Accounting & Advisory Services (CAAS) practice, where the CFO will implement best practices, drive financial strategy, and manage client relationships. The role requires a blend of financial expertise, strategic planning, and client engagement, ensuring that clients receive top-tier financial guidance and support.

Responsibilities

  • Perform CFO functions as part of the client's accounting services team.
  • Identify and implement best practices related to the services provided to add value to the client.
  • Work with clients to set financial policy and actively participate in overall strategy.
  • Drive capital planning, risk management, ratio and KPI analysis, and board of director interactions.
  • Lead financial administration, planning, and budgeting.
  • Oversee longer-term budget planning and cost management.
  • Monitor progress of budgets and present operational metrics.
  • Ensure financial staff maintains financial record systems in accordance with appropriate principles and monitors the use of funds.
  • Manage cash flow and forecasting, directing financial accounting.
  • Coordinate audit activities.
  • Effectively manage multiple client engagements.
  • Build strong client relationships and become a key member of the client management team.
  • Develop key external business networks and become a service and industry thought leader.

Requirements

  • 8 years relative work experience as an Assistant Controller, Controller, or equivalent.
  • Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Nonprofit industry experience is highly preferred.
  • CPA certification preferred but not required.
  • Knowledge of QuickBooks preferred.
  • Prior project management and client management experience preferred but not required.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and skilled in multitasking.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in a client-facing role.
  • Ability to do frequent local travel to/from client sites and may require occasional non-local or overnight travel for client visits, training, meetings, and/or other business-related purposes.
