About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is charged with modernizing the organization's operational financial infrastructure. This role is pivotal in managing and leading the financial and accounting management, compliance and risk management, reporting of all grants and funding regulations, accounts payable, budgeting, balancing of revenues and expenses, payroll, banking relations, daily cash management, retirement accounting, administrative budget, and agency-wide budget. The CFO must provide timely and accurate financial information and performance reporting to the CEO, board of directors, and stakeholders while providing leadership to guide the organization's financial activities, including annual and long-term planning and forecasting. In terms of organizational leadership and strategy, the CFO will work closely with the senior leadership team to develop and drive the execution of the organization's strategic goals and objectives, ensuring that the financial and operating structure supports the needs of its programs. This includes advising the senior leadership team on the organization's financial performance and long-term financial planning, budgeting, cash flow, investments, and policy matters. The CFO will also provide reliable cash flow projections, reporting mechanisms, and 'what if' scenarios while managing relationships with the Board's Finance and Audit committees and acting as a fiscal liaison to city and government funding agencies. The CFO is responsible for all finance and accounting functions, including day-to-day financial reporting, working capital and cash management, financial controls, and risk management. This includes leading financial management activities and an integrated accounting and financial management system, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards and principles, and overseeing the organizational cash management processes. The CFO will develop and oversee the implementation of programs and processes that ensure robust monitoring of financial transactions and budget execution to achieve compliance with applicable laws and regulations. In terms of team management, the CFO will supervise, manage, and direct all aspects of finance and accounting, communicating a vision and strategy for the finance and accounting team. The role involves managing and mentoring the team to achieve ambitious results and creating a high standard of accountability. The CFO will also facilitate effective communication with other staff within an interdisciplinary context and participate in training and staff-development activities to maintain necessary skills for successful job performance.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the financial and accounting management of the organization.
  • Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.
  • Provide timely and accurate financial information to the CEO and board of directors.
  • Develop and drive the execution of the organization's strategic financial goals and objectives.
  • Advise on financial performance, long-term planning, budgeting, and cash flow management.
  • Manage relationships with the Board's Finance and Audit committees.
  • Oversee the organizational cash management processes and ensure timely cash flow reporting.
  • Supervise financial institution relations and ensure cash availability for payroll and obligations.
  • Develop reliable cash flow projection processes and reporting mechanisms.
  • Implement programs to monitor financial transactions and budget execution for compliance.
  • Partner with the CEO and Board to deploy investment capital effectively.
  • Oversee the activities of the accounting staff for accurate financial reporting.
  • Support team members' learning, development, and career growth.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Finance, or Accounting.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation is required.
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years of experience in financial management.
  • At least ten years of direct management and supervisory experience.
  • Knowledge of human services administration and office management systems.
  • Nonprofit accounting experience required.
  • Prior experience with DHS housing contracts preferred.
  • Experience in Budget, Analysis, Forecasting, and Cash Management.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and project management skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Knowledge of MS-Office, especially advanced Excel.
  • Familiarity with database management systems and accounting applications.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in nonprofit treasury items such as receivable, advances, and revenue.
  • Ability to act as a liaison among a range of internal customers.
