About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a senior-level position responsible for strategically aligning the financial operations of the Democratic Governors Association (DGA) and its associated entities with the organization's political and organizational goals. Reporting directly to the Executive Director, the CFO will provide regular financial analysis and advice to inform strategic spending decisions, manage a substantial organizational budget, and ensure compliance with campaign finance reporting obligations.

Responsibilities

  • Create and manage a $300 million+ organizational cycle budget, providing regular reporting to the Executive Director.
  • Provide short-term and long-term cash flow projections to inform political spending decisions.
  • Collaborate with department directors to manage budget changes and expectations.
  • Oversee coordinated-side political payments with the Political department.
  • Facilitate independent-side political payments with the Independent Expenditure department.
  • Ensure compliance with campaign-finance reporting obligations while receiving deposits through fundraising programs.
  • Align multiple revenue streams to meet organizational needs during election cycles in collaboration with various directors and legal counsel.
  • Manage compliance vendor relationships and banking relationships.
  • Create a culture of collaboration and accountability to manage financial risk across the organization.
  • Oversee compliance, accounting, and budgeting departments to ensure timely filing of campaign finance reports.
  • Manage Quarterly/Annual IRS and tax filings for all associated organizations in collaboration with accounting and legal firms.
  • Oversee annual external audits across all organizations.
  • Manage special projects and assignments as assigned by the Executive Director.

Requirements

  • At least 10 years of experience managing multi-million-dollar budgets for political organizations or national non-profits.
  • At least 10 years of experience facilitating payments and receiving contributions for PACs with federal and state campaign finance obligations.
  • At least 4 years of experience working collaboratively with senior leaders to execute organizational goals.
  • At least 4 years of experience building and managing a staff of 4 or more and managing outside consultants.
  • Strong understanding of financial operations for nonfederal committees, Federal PACs, 527 organizations, and 501(c) organizations.
  • Experience providing short-term and long-term expense forecasts and managing cash flow across fundraising streams.
  • Strong experience using QuickBooks and NGPVAN software.
  • Expertise in generally accepted accounting principles and collaborating with auditors.
  • Experience managing equipment, technology, and software among a large group of people.
  • Experience managing external relationships related to financial operations.
