About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Alliance for Justice (AFJ) is a strategic, mission-oriented leader responsible for overseeing all financial operations and guiding the organization through a transformative phase. Reporting to the VP of Operations/Chief of Staff, the CFO will play a critical role in shaping AFJ's financial strategy, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and providing financial insights to support decision-making. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and project management skills, along with the ability to communicate complex financial information to diverse audiences.

Responsibilities

  • Serve on AFJ's leadership team, developing and executing organization-wide strategies.
  • Shape AFJ's financial strategy in partnership with the VP of Operations/Chief of Staff.
  • Manage financial capital and communicate capital requirements to the President and the Boards.
  • Develop a strategic growth strategy in collaboration with the VP of Institutional Advancement.
  • Communicate effectively with AFJ's Boards of Directors regarding financial health and sustainability.
  • Conduct proactive analysis to improve key business decisions.
  • Provide financial insights to support business strategy and risk mitigation.
  • Drive the annual budget process with the support of the Director of Finance.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 12 years of experience in finance leadership roles, particularly in 501(c)(3) organizations.
  • Experience operating in a mid-sized non-profit with a philanthropic business model.
  • Advanced degree in accounting, finance, or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
  • Proven ability to manage and coach teams effectively.
  • Technology fluency, including financial reporting systems.
  • Demonstrated skill in navigating complex organizations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with change management in a non-profit setting.
  • Familiarity with grants management and reporting systems.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
