About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Adath Jeshurun Congregation is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the financial health and strategic direction of a $5 million organization. This position involves managing various functions including finance, accounting, information technology (IT), human resources, and risk management. The CFO will work closely with the Executive Director, the Board of Trustees, and other stakeholders to ensure the organization’s financial stability and growth. The role requires a proactive approach to financial planning, budgeting, and risk management, ensuring that the organization adheres to best practices and regulatory requirements. The CFO will lead the development and execution of financial strategies, ensuring alignment with the congregation's goals. This includes preparing an annual budget, monitoring financial performance, and providing strategic recommendations to the Board. The CFO will also be responsible for maintaining sound financial policies and procedures, managing the organization’s accounting functions, and ensuring compliance with all financial regulations. Additionally, the CFO will supervise the accounting staff and manage relationships with external vendors, auditors, and financial partners. In this role, the CFO will also play a key part in fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment, supporting the professional development of staff, and promoting the congregation's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. Responsibilities

  • Plan and implement all the organization's financial activities, including long-range forecasting and multi-year planning.
  • Set financial goals for the Congregation and lead implementation to achieve those goals in collaboration with the Board of Trustees and Executive Director.
  • Prepare an organization-wide annual budget with input from clergy, program managers, and the Board Finance Committee, ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Develop a budgeting approach and philosophy, supporting and building financial acumen within the staff and Board.
  • Ensure sound financial and risk management practices are followed, assessing and mitigating financial, legal, and organizational risks.
  • Maintain and monitor financial policies and procedures, creating consistencies and efficiencies while implementing best practices.
  • Contribute to the strategic planning process, including scenario planning and long-range forecasting.
  • Support effective capital planning and investments in the synagogue building, grounds, cemeteries, and equipment.
  • Develop and implement sustainable financial, risk management, HR, and IT systems and processes to support congregational operations.
  • Manage the organization's PEO and ensure equitable HR practices that reflect the organization's values and comply with applicable laws.
  • Establish and maintain constructive relationships with external vendors and partners, including auditors, funders, and investment advisors.
  • Lead and implement major organizational initiatives as directed by the Executive Director.
  • Coordinate and supervise the organization's monthly and annual accounting functions, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting.
  • Maintain the general ledger, chart of accounts, and accounting software, and meet with budget managers monthly to report on progress against budget.
  • Analyze and recommend changes to programs and strategies based on financial conditions, ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Oversee and certify external audits, tax filings, and other required fiduciary reporting.
  • Provide financial leadership to the accounting team and budget managers, fostering a collaborative work culture.
  • Engage with the Board, providing accurate and strategic financial information and formulating recommendations for consideration.

Requirements

  • Five to seven years of financial leadership experience.
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic finance, accounting, reporting, analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and financial management policies and procedures.
  • Proven ability to supervise, manage, and develop an engaged and effective staff team.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting, particularly in faith-based organizations.
