About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a pivotal role in overseeing all financial aspects of BOSS, a leading social services organization dedicated to addressing mass homelessness, mass incarceration, and community violence. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in non-profit accounting and will be responsible for financial strategy, financial planning and analysis, financial reports, annual audits, compliance, real estate, and bank relationships. The CFO will collaborate closely with the CEO and the executive team to make informed decisions regarding the company's financial strategy and operations. This position requires a strong background in finance and management, as well as a commitment to the mission of helping homeless, poor, and disabled individuals achieve health and self-sufficiency. The CFO will oversee budgeting, forecasting, reporting, financial audits, accounting, payroll, insurance, risk management, contracts, planning, real estate, and legal financial compliance functions. A key responsibility will be to lead initiatives aimed at developing new sources of revenue, particularly by optimizing and expanding revenue from MediCAL and other associated programs. The CFO will work as a thought partner with the CEO and executive leadership to align new revenue sources with the organization’s financial goals and values. This position supervises the Controller, who leads a team of six in the finance department, and is a direct report to the CEO. Essential duties include leading financial planning for the organization, developing and optimizing funding sources, participating in strategic planning, overseeing organizational risk management, and ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory standards. The CFO will also manage the budget, present financial information to the Board of Directors, and maintain policies and procedures for all financial activities. Additionally, the role involves facilitating real estate management and ensuring facilities are compliant and well-maintained. The CFO will supervise the finance and operations teams, fostering a positive work environment that emphasizes high standards and best practices.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee all financial aspects of BOSS including budgeting, forecasting, reporting, financial audit, accounting, payroll, insurance, risk management, contracts, planning, real estate, and legal financial compliance functions.
  • Lead financial planning for the organization, including short-term and long-term financial forecasts of financial performance for internal and external use.
  • Develop and optimize MediCAL funding and other new sources of ongoing state funding.
  • Participate in organization-wide strategic planning in conjunction with the Executive Team.
  • Oversee organizational risk management, identifying, evaluating, and preventing risks by implementing assessment protocols and controls.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of all financial reporting, ensuring timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting.
  • Build a reporting infrastructure that provides a comprehensive, consistent method of reporting medical and financial data to support management and control of finances, revenue streams, donations, and expenses.
  • Oversee annual audit and ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions.
  • Manage the budget for the organization, including development of priorities, presentation for the Board of Directors, and training and education for management staff.
  • Facilitate lease renewals, tenant management, and other property management issues in collaboration with the Operations Department.
  • Supervise, develop, and mentor the finance and operations teams, creating a positive work environment that emphasizes high standards and best practices.

Requirements

  • 10+ years progressively responsible nonprofit accounting experience, including management and supervision of accounting programs; experience with $10 million plus budget required.
  • Experience overseeing revenue cycle and MediCAL reimbursement systems and developing new sources of funding from the state.
  • MBA, CPA or equivalent combination of education and experience desired.
  • Data-driven mindset and excellent quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Experience and knowledge with facilities/property management and maintenance.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing new financial and accounting systems and utilizing technology to drive process improvement.
  • Ability to work as a member of a management team.
  • Collaborative project management and team-building skills.

  • Ability to set limits, prioritize, delegate appropriately and handle pressure situations.
