About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Agency of Education (AOE) is responsible for overseeing the finance division, which includes the Education Finance, Accounting, and Compliance and Risk Management Units. This role involves managing complex budgets, ensuring compliance with accounting standards, and leading professional accounting staff. The CFO will also handle all fiscal functions, including budget development, auditing, and fiscal operations, while maintaining communication with state and federal leaders and external organizations. The position allows for remote work within Vermont and contiguous states, with some in-office requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the AOE finance division, including Education Finance, Accounting, and Compliance and Risk Management Units.
  • Manage complex budgets with various funding sources.
  • Ensure compliance with accepted accounting principles and standards.
  • Lead and supervise professional accounting personnel.
  • Handle all fiscal functions including budget development, auditing, and internal controls.
  • Communicate regularly with state and federal leaders, legislators, and partner organizations.
  • Attend public meetings and hearings, and testify before the Legislature.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in accounting, business or public administration, or a related field AND five years of professional level accounting experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related discipline with 20 credit hours in accounting and eight years of professional level fiscal operations experience.
  • Four years or more as a Financial Director III with the State of Vermont.
  • Three years or more experience as a Financial Director IV with the State of Vermont.

Nice-to-haves

  • Professional to executive level experience in a State Agency.
  • Experience working with the VISION financial management system.
  • Master's degree in public administration, business administration, or a related degree program.
  • CPA or similar certification.
