About the position

Howard University, a leading research institution and historically Black private university, is seeking a creative, collaborative, and forward-thinking leader to serve as its next Senior Vice President, Chief Financial Officer & Treasurer (CFO). This position reports directly to the President and is a key member of the university's senior leadership team. The CFO will join the university at a pivotal moment characterized by significant growth and forward momentum. The primary responsibility of the CFO will be to oversee and strengthen the university's financial position as it navigates the opportunities and risks associated with ambitious goals. As Howard University continues to capitalize on its existing strengths and strong market presence, the institution requires an astute leader who can leverage its collective assets, build a sustainable infrastructure, effectively oversee fiscal resources, and foster a diverse and welcoming environment. The CFO will collaborate with key internal and external stakeholders to ensure the university's financial health and sustainability. The CFO will be responsible for the financial operations of the university, overseeing areas such as the controller's office, treasury operations, student accounts, budget, procurement and contracting, accounts payable, investments, insurance and risk management, and real estate development. The CFO will manage the university's annual operating budget of $784.4 million. In addition to being a key member of the President's Cabinet, the CFO will liaise with the chair of the Board of Trustees and co-chair the Tuition Rates Advisory and Budget Advisory Committees. The ideal candidate for this role will be a seasoned financial leader with extensive experience in strategic resource management and fiscal oversight. They must possess strong technical knowledge and the ability to assess and improve business processes. A proven track record of effective fiscal management in support of key strategic initiatives and priorities is essential. The CFO must also be an excellent communicator, committed to the highest ethical and professional standards, and a strong team leader and manager who thrives in a diverse academic community.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and strengthen the university's financial position.
  • Manage the financial operations of the university, including the controller's office, treasury operations, and student accounts.
  • Oversee the university's annual operating budget of $784.4 million.
  • Collaborate with the President, Board of Trustees, Cabinet, and Deans to ensure financial sustainability.
  • Liaise with the chair of the Board of Trustees and co-chair the Tuition Rates Advisory and Budget Advisory Committees.
  • Assess and improve business processes related to fiscal management.
  • Foster a diverse and welcoming environment within the financial operations.

Requirements
