About the position

Marten is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join its management team, marking the first time the firm has employed this role. The CFO will be responsible for professionalizing the financial management of the firm, which has grown organically and now requires greater structure. This position will be based in Seattle and involves working closely with the firm's equity owners and senior management team to enhance profitability and implement strategic financial objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Communicate business insights to owners and management to improve profitability.
  • Provide leadership in developing and evaluating short and long-term strategic financial objectives.
  • Supervise and mentor accounting department members.
  • Maintain communication with senior management and equity partners regarding business issues.
  • Develop and implement financial management tools for reporting on key law firm metrics.
  • Oversee payroll reporting and tax compliance.
  • Collaborate with outside CPA firm on tax reporting and compliance requirements.
  • Ensure effective internal controls and timely production of financial statements.
  • Manage large accounts receivable and unbilled work in progress to maximize collections.
  • Maintain relationships with financial institutions to manage cash and financial obligations.
  • Ensure adequate insurance protection for the firm's risk tolerance.

Requirements

  • Experience growing a multi-state and/or international professional service firm.
  • Strong strategic-thinking ability and business acumen.
  • CPA or MBA from a leading business program preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience, preferably in law firm leadership.
  • High level of professional integrity and accountability.
  • Outstanding communication skills with the ability to advise senior management.
  • Exceptional ability to build credibility and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and execute tasks effectively.
  • Positive personality with creative problem-solving skills.
  • Extensive experience with time and billing software systems, preferably SurePoint LMS or similar.
  • Advanced Excel skills.
  • Experience in budgeting and forecasting models.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with law firm management software such as ProLaw or Juris.
  • Demonstrated success in influencing decisions using data and analytical tools.
