About the position

Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC) is seeking a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) who will be a key member of the Executive Management Team. The CFO will be responsible for overseeing the financial management and accounting functions of the cooperative and its subsidiary, EMPOWER Broadband. This role requires a highly motivated leader with exemplary management skills, strong accounting knowledge, and sound financial management capabilities. The CFO will play a crucial role in shaping the cooperative's accounting policies and ensuring the financial success of both organizations. The CFO will provide oversight and direction for the financial management and accounting functions, ensuring that reliable, adequate, and efficient financial information is available. This includes compiling, analyzing, and developing an annual capital and operating budget for the cooperative, as well as advising the President/CEO on fiscal objectives and procedures. The CFO will also direct finance and administration activities, including annual financial audits, rate design, loan applications, and the management of cooperative assets and finances. In addition to these responsibilities, the CFO will manage cash flow, oversee insurance programs, and ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations. The role involves directly managing the Accounting and Finance team, providing support, guidance, performance reviews, training, and professional coaching based on employee needs. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in financial management, particularly in the context of rural utilities services (RUS) accounting, and will be committed to the cooperative's mission of enhancing the quality of life in rural southern Virginia.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and direct the financial management and accounting functions of the Cooperative.
  • Compile, analyze, and develop an annual capital and operating budget for the Cooperative.
  • Advise and assist the President/CEO in formulating fiscal objectives, procedures, and programs.
  • Direct finance and administration activities such as annual financial audits, rate design, and preparing loan applications.
  • Administer the Cooperative's liability, property, and workers compensation insurance programs.
  • Manage cash flow and invest working capital funds for the Cooperative and subsidiaries.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Directly manage the Accounting and Finance team, providing support and professional coaching.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business administration, finance, accounting or related field.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years progressively responsible experience in financial management and accounting principles.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of RUS accounting experience.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of supervisory experience.
