About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Mystic Seaport Museum is responsible for overseeing the financial management, information technology, facilities management, and legal affairs of the Museum. Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the CFO plays a crucial role in ensuring the Museum's financial systems are efficient and effective, while also supporting the overall strategic goals of the organization. This position involves significant managerial responsibilities and requires collaboration with senior management to assess programs, budgets, and business decisions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and oversee the annual budget in excess of $20MM.
  • Negotiate, maintain, and ensure compliance with contracts and agreements regarding outsourced food and retail services.
  • Review, analyze, and report on monthly results; update strategic financial plans and forecasts; provide monthly financial reporting to stakeholders.
  • Oversee grant administration and manage key contracts.
  • Conduct program reviews and assist senior staff in managing the Museum's portfolio of programs.
  • Monitor the performance and application of endowment funds valued in excess of $60MM.
  • Oversee the Information Technology function and participate in software and hardware upgrades.
  • Develop annual capital budget and track maintenance needs in collaboration with the Director of Facilities.
  • Work with brokers to identify and mitigate operational risks.
  • Prepare all Board materials for Finance, Investment, Audit, and Risk Management committees.
  • Present summary financial information at Board meetings.
  • Ensure internal control systems are designed and operating effectively.
  • Oversee the annual financial statement audit and all tax filings.
  • Prepare cash flow projections and ensure adequate funding.
  • Oversee budget development for construction and preservation projects.
  • Liaise with external investment managers regarding investment allocation decisions.
  • Participate in analysis of charitable giving programs and liaise with external auditors and legal counsel.
  • Maintain banking relationships and negotiate credit facilities.
  • Oversee and mentor the finance team.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 10-15 years of experience in a senior operational and/or financial role in a complex organization with multiple revenue streams.
  • BA required; CPA and/or MBA preferred.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite; experience with Sage, Tessitura, and Ramp products is a plus.
  • Strong communication skills to explain financial concepts to individuals with varying degrees of financial understanding.
  • Analytical skills, including modeling and logical thinking to solve complex problems.
