About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington is responsible for overseeing the department's financial planning and operations. This includes managing the annual budget process, financial reporting, and providing strategic financial recommendations to senior leadership. The CFO plays a critical role in ensuring the financial health of the department, which has a budget of approximately $520 million, and serves as a key advisor to the Vice Chair of Finance and Administration and other department leaders.

Responsibilities

  • Organize and direct the annual budget process for the Department of Medicine (DoM).
  • Oversee monthly and annual financial reporting for the DoM at both Division and Central Unit levels.
  • Assess DoM financial performance against the annual budget and long-term strategy.
  • Develop strategic financial plans for the department, including financial analyses and proposals for new programs.
  • Ensure compliance with policies and regulations concerning the department's financial activities.
  • Prepare and present departmental monthly financial reporting to department leadership and quarterly financial reporting to the dean's office.
  • Direct and oversee all financial operations for the central administrative units.
  • Compile, interpret, and communicate financial information to various audiences.
  • Develop a monthly financial dashboard and metrics.
  • Oversee the departmental budgeting process and organizational performance against the budget and long-term strategy.
  • Provide senior leadership and mentoring to Division and Center/Institute Administrators.
  • Establish strong working relationships with faculty, staff, and other stakeholders.
  • Oversee the contracting process across the DoM and ensure compliance with UW policies.
  • Provide financial support for educational programs and oversee systems for compliance with billing and crediting systems.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in Business Administration or related field.
  • 6-8 years of experience within a research or academic institution.
  • Proven administrative, financial, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a diverse environment.
  • Good supervisory skills and ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management, analysis, and reporting.
  • Ability to develop and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • Proven leadership, project management, and communication skills.
