About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at Second Harvest Food Bank serves as a strategic leader within the executive team, focusing on the organization's financial health and compliance. The CFO collaborates closely with the CEO and other C-suite executives to enhance operational performance and develop long-term financial strategies. This role requires a balance of strategic oversight and hands-on management of financial operations, ensuring the organization meets its financial goals while adhering to regulatory standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the current financial situation and develop a roadmap for financial strength.
  • Develop long-term financial strategies to maximize resources.
  • Implement and maintain financial policies and procedures with appropriate internal controls.
  • Direct and manage all fiscal operations, including financial planning, forecasting, and cash management.
  • Manage complex processing of restricted and unrestricted funds, including government and grant funding.
  • Engage in financial analysis, process improvements, and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Administer and maximize the investment portfolio according to Board-approved policies.
  • Produce and analyze monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports.
  • Support the Audit and Finance Committees of the Board of Directors.
  • Direct budget planning and presentation, ensuring robust budget creation.
  • Provide financial information for the annual audit and work closely with external auditors.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and motivate Finance Department staff.
  • Establish a sound financial structure and division of duties for department staff.
  • Forge and maintain positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Act as the CEO's chief financial advisor and participate in strategic planning.
  • Review results and improve the effectiveness of Finance and administrative functions.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business Administration/Management or equivalent.
  • 10+ years of experience in finance or accounting.
  • 3+ years of experience in a finance leadership position.
  • Experience in nonprofit accounting, including fund and grant accounting.
  • Audit experience and CPA or MBA preferred.
  • Strong strategic thinking and business judgment skills.
  • Highly computer literate with experience in accounting and CRM software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Navision or Ceres accounting software.
  • Knowledge of food bank operations and community service organizations.
