About the position

LA Family Housing is a leading homeless service provider and affordable housing developer in Los Angeles, dedicated to the belief that housing is a human right. The organization has been at the forefront of innovative solutions aimed at ending homelessness for over 40 years. In 2023 alone, LA Family Housing connected more than 13,000 individuals with essential housing resources and supportive services. The organization owns or co-owns 39 interim, affordable, and supportive housing properties, with an additional 810 units of permanent supportive housing in the pipeline. This community-based approach allows LA Family Housing to influence how homelessness is addressed both locally and nationally, positioning its staff as leaders in innovation, best practices, and policy within housing production and homeless services. The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) will play a pivotal role in advising the organization on all aspects of accounting, including budget preparation and monitoring, financial statement and tax preparation, and supervision of financial audits. The CFO will oversee an operating budget of $80 million and will be part of the Executive Leadership Team, contributing to the mission of LA Family Housing by providing strategic financial leadership and guidance. This position requires a systematic and disciplined approach to managing daily accounting and finance operations, as well as inspiring and motivating team members towards their goals. The CFO will also be involved in risk management, including the binding of insurances, and will serve as a resource for the organization's leadership on all financial matters.

Responsibilities

  • Advise the organization on all aspects of accounting, including budget preparation and monitoring.
  • Oversee financial statement and tax preparation, and supervise financial audits including the annual audit.
  • Manage the accounting and compliance for real estate activities and transactions.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports for senior management to keep them apprised of financial performance by location, program, and contract.
  • Collaborate with executive and senior management to prepare the annual budget.
  • Serve as the strategic financial advisor to senior management and other key staff.
  • Ensure that the organization's vision, mission, and values are fulfilled and actualized in its operations and services.
  • Manage the agency's general ledger and cash flow in collaboration with the Controller.
  • Oversee accounting, finance, and banking requirements for all real estate transactions.
  • Staff the Finance, Investment and Risk Management Committees and present internal financials to the Board of Directors quarterly.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting, or related field from an accredited university; Master's degree or CPA highly preferred.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years' experience in accounting, finance, tax, and audit preparation.
  • Experience serving on a Senior Leadership/Executive Management Team required.
  • Strong leadership and presentation skills; demonstrates visionary leadership, creativity, insight, and boldness.
  • Experience in strategic planning, non-profit real estate development, and accounting.
  • Strong understanding of NetSuite.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in managing a large operating budget.
  • Familiarity with GAAP standards and FASB updates.
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of personalities and manage relationships diplomatically.
