About the position

Hamilton City Council is seeking an exceptional Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to join our Executive Leadership Team. This pivotal role is responsible for steering the Council's financial strategy and operations. The CFO will lead and advise on the annual and 10-year budget processes, conduct financial analysis, oversee financial monitoring and reporting, manage revenue and rating, and ensure compliance with year-end reporting and audits. Additionally, the CFO will play a crucial role in strategic procurement, ensuring that the Council's financial resources are utilized effectively and efficiently. In this fast-paced and dynamic work environment, the CFO will engage in a variety of tasks each day, which may include working on strategic initiatives, developing key performance measures, providing financial advice to Elected Members, the Executive Leadership Team, or Council committees, and presenting reports at Council Meetings. The role requires a high level of public confidence in the Council's financial management, and the CFO will be responsible for fostering this trust through transparent and effective communication. The ideal candidate will possess significant experience in a similar role within a medium to large organization and will be a Licensed Chartered Accountant. Proven leadership skills are essential, particularly the ability to engage and motivate teams through periods of change. The CFO must be adept at presenting complex financial plans and operational budgets, confidently advising and challenging the status quo, and engaging with various stakeholders, including government agencies, industry associations, business groups, and the wider community. A working knowledge of Tikanga Maaori protocols is also required, with support provided for this aspect. Furthermore, the candidate should demonstrate political acumen and a track record of building and maintaining trust and confidence within the community.
