About the position

The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of The Lundquist Institute will oversee the financial health and sustainability of the organization, leading the Finance and Accounting teams. This role is crucial for developing financial strategies, managing budgets, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations, all while supporting the mission of the Institute.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement financial strategies for long-term sustainability and growth.
  • Provide financial leadership for budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes.
  • Lead the budgeting process, including preparation, analysis, and monitoring of departmental budgets.
  • Participate in planning capital projects as part of infrastructure grants.
  • Prepare and present accurate financial reports to the Board of Directors and executive team.
  • Serve as liaison for Finance and Audit committees for the Board of Directors.
  • Collaborate with the Senior VP of Advancement for development financial reporting.
  • Lead commercial and real estate contract negotiations and management.
  • Oversee treasury functions, including cash management and investment strategies.
  • Oversee payroll operations for accurate and timely processing of employee compensation.
  • Provide guidance for general accounting functions, including accounts payable/receivable and month-end close processes.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and all financial regulations.
  • Identify and implement process improvements for financial operations and reporting efficiency.
  • Ensure effective grant and contract accounting, monitoring expenditures and compliance with regulations.
  • Provide guidance for timely submission of invoices and financial reports to funding agencies.
  • Oversee and guide external and internal audits related to federal funding.
  • Collaborate with the executive team to develop and execute the Institute's strategic plan.
  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Board of Directors, providing financial insights and recommendations.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop the finance and accounting team.
  • Work with program teams to build financial literacy and understanding of funding compliance requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree in Business Administration, Accounting, or Finance, and CPA preferred.
  • 10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in a research institute, nonprofit, or academic setting.
  • Proficient in financial management software and accounting systems; strong Excel and data analysis skills.
  • In-depth understanding of grants management, federal regulations, and compliance requirements.
  • Strong understanding of non-profit accounting principles, grant management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven ability to lead and develop teams; excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) is preferred.
