About the position

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) will lead the Information Technology Services (ITS) department, providing strategic direction and oversight for all technology-related services across the institution. This role is crucial for ensuring that NCSSM remains at the forefront of IT infrastructure, security, and usage, supporting academic programs, administrative functions, and student services. The CIO will work closely with the Chancellor and other senior leaders to promote the effective use of technology in advancing the school's mission.

Responsibilities

  • Promote and support the strategic use of information technology to advance the overall mission of NCSSM.
  • Plan, develop, implement, integrate, and maintain technology and information systems that support the goals of NCSSM.
  • Manage the daily operations of ITS resources and set direction for ITS personnel on both campuses.
  • Develop and manage the ITS budget, ensuring cost-effective resource allocation and strategy for investment in emerging technologies.
  • Oversee and advance NCSSM's IT governance, applications, data analytics, project management office, instructional technology, computing, communications, embedded academic support, cybersecurity, and data privacy infrastructure.
  • Provide reliable and responsive information management and technology services to faculty, staff, and students.
  • Coordinate identification and prioritization of IT initiatives among various primary operating units in alignment with ITS.
  • Research, recommend, and implement emerging technologies to inspire teaching, learning, research, and support.
  • Collaborate with senior leadership and stakeholders to assess and anticipate information technology needs.
  • Engage with faculty, staff, and students to understand their technological needs and challenges.
  • Oversee on-premises and cloud infrastructure, software applications, cybersecurity measures, and IT support services.
  • Ensure optimal performance, security, and reliability of information technology systems.
  • Maintain comprehensive cybersecurity protocols to protect institutional data and assets.
  • Establish and maintain strategic vendor relationships, negotiate contracts, and ensure service level agreements are met.

Requirements

  • A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technology field is required.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible, professional experience in a technology-based environment is preferred.
  • Proven experience in developing and executing long-term technology strategies aligned with institutional goals.
  • Experience in establishing IT governance structures and policies to ensure efficient decision-making and compliance with industry regulations.
  • Demonstrated success in implementing robust cybersecurity measures to safeguard sensitive data.
  • Ability to manage complex data systems, including student information and institutional analytics.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in academic environments and knowledge of infrastructure systems.
  • Proficiency in managing IT budgets, procurement, and vendor relationships.
