About the position

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the New Mexico Public Education Department is responsible for implementing and enhancing data collection, validation, and reporting systems for K-12 education data. This role oversees the information technology infrastructure necessary for agency operations and fosters collaboration among state agencies to develop shared data systems. The CIO will set the vision for IT within the department, manage relationships with stakeholders, and ensure continuous improvement in data quality and timeliness.

Responsibilities

  • Set the vision for the Public Education Department's IT initiatives.
  • Lead and manage IT teams, coordinating with other leaders within the department.
  • Develop resources and manage the IT budget effectively.
  • Engage with internal and external stakeholders to manage data governance and collaborations.
  • Communicate effectively with stakeholders to improve systems and support agency initiatives.
  • Develop metrics to track IT progress and ensure data quality.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Management Information Systems, Information Technology, Engineering, or a similar technical degree.
  • Ten years of experience in Applications Development, IT Architecture, Data Management, Network Administration, Project Management, IT Security/Compliance, or Systems Administration.
  • At least six years of experience managing multiple IT teams.

  • Ability to provide constructive feedback to staff regularly.
  • Experience in database design, data structures, and data governance.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Prior experience as a chief information officer in a large organization.
