About the position

Sonoma State University is seeking an Associate Vice President for Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO) to lead the Information Technology department. This role is pivotal in providing strategic management and guidance for IT services that support the university's mission of excellence in teaching, scholarship, and community engagement. The CIO will report directly to the Vice President for Administration and Finance and will be a key member of the university's Senior Administrative Leadership Team. The incumbent will represent the university on various councils and committees, including the CSU CIO council, and will be responsible for the effective management and improvement of campus-wide information technology services. The CIO's primary responsibilities include leading initiatives to deploy technology solutions that enhance student success, facilitate teaching and learning, and improve business processes. The role requires collaboration with stakeholders across the university to ensure that IT strategies align with the university's goals and the Chancellor's Office Strategic Plan. The CIO will oversee the development of a high-performing IT team, stabilize core technology infrastructure, and implement an information security strategy to safeguard the university's information assets. In addition to managing IT services, the CIO will work on improving communication between the IT team and the university community, enhancing accessible technology initiatives, and optimizing the use of existing technologies. The position also involves establishing partnerships with other CSU campuses and industry to bring additional capabilities to Sonoma State University. The anticipated annual salary for this position is $210,000.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership and management for the Information Technology department.
  • Supervise staff and student personnel within the IT department.
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders to facilitate transparent IT decision-making across the university.
  • Oversee and update the SSU IT strategies and priorities as defined in the IT Strategic Plan.
  • Stabilize the core technology infrastructure and support model to improve IT services and solutions.
  • Develop a high-performing IT team with a service-oriented, collaborative culture.
  • Establish an IT roadmap for major applications and infrastructure.
  • Work in partnership with campus leadership to deliver IT services that align with campus needs.
  • Improve services to support teaching and learning and maintain effective technologies in classrooms and online learning spaces.
  • Implement an information security strategy to safeguard information assets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
  • Five years of experience at a senior management level in information technology.
  • Experience directing complex technology projects including proposal formulation and project planning.
  • Significant understanding of systems applicable within a complex academic environment.
  • Experience with emerging applications used in academic settings to support administrative systems and instructional delivery.
  • Experience establishing partnerships with IT vendors and community organizations.
  • Experience leading organizations in continuous improvement of IT management processes.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in a relevant field.
  • Ten years of senior IT leadership experience within higher education institutions.
