About the position

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) position is a pivotal role within our client's organization, which provides financial services to individual investors across the United States and Canada. The firm is dedicated to client service and focuses on the needs of individual investors, ensuring that every aspect of its business is designed to cater to these clients. The CIO will be a succession-ready senior technology executive who will join a robust team of approximately 1500 individuals in the Information Services Group. This role is designed to facilitate a smooth integration into the company, positioning the individual to play a key role in the future success of the group as the successor to the current CIO. The ideal candidate will initially lead one or more of the five key business areas of the IT organization, allowing for a comprehensive understanding of the company's operations and the strategic role that IT plays in its success. The current environment in Information Systems is strong, with high technology satisfaction scores among financial advisors and clients. The CIO will be responsible for optimizing the current structure and developing a robust vision and implementation roadmap to sustain the organization for the future. This includes establishing successful relationships throughout the firm based on reality, openness, and mutual trust. The CIO will work closely with the current Chief Information Officer and senior leadership, building credibility within the Information Systems team and executive management. The role requires providing strategic and operational direction for planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization's applications and solutions. The CIO will oversee multiple concurrent initiatives, forge strong partnerships across the company, and provide leadership to a large IT organization. Additionally, the CIO will be responsible for recruiting and developing highly-skilled professionals, implementing a management approach that drives performance, and translating technology plans into business-relevant terms.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and operational direction for planning, designing, implementing, and maintaining the organization's applications and solutions.
  • Oversee the execution of multiple, concurrent initiatives in support of the organization's business objectives and client needs.
  • Forge strong partnerships across the company to identify and implement business process improvements related to key business applications.
  • Provide leadership to a large IT organization including those who design, develop and build in-house solutions and application software and ensure user requirements are properly defined and implemented.
  • Establish and manage relationships with key application and service vendors, and hold them accountable for delivery on all critical initiatives.
  • Recruit, inspire, and develop highly-skilled professionals who can consistently deliver quality results that meet stated business objectives.
  • Implement a management approach that drives organizational performance, encourages creativity, develops technical proficiencies and rewards key performers.
  • Actively build and maintain productive relationships or networks of internal/external contacts.
  • Translate technology plans into business-relevant terms, such as efficiency, return on investment, customer acquisition and satisfaction, and regulatory impact.

Requirements

  • Minimum 10 plus years of experience across multiple technology areas including Business Solutions Development / Application Development and Infrastructure and/or Architecture.
  • Minimum of 5 years of executive leadership experience within a large (600+) IT organization.
  • In-depth understanding of financial services and investments including industry processes and operations.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills; secure ego and open to feedback.
  • Proficient in problem solving through root cause analysis using industry standard tools.
  • Experienced in system development methodologies and IS processes.
  • Experienced with project management concepts and best practices.
  • Deep domain experience in emerging technologies, such as mobile, web, and social, and their potential impact on businesses.
  • Hands-on experience negotiating and implementing sourcing agreements; should include experience working with external business partners, consulting organizations, off-shoring firms, and hardware and software vendors.
