About the position

The Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the University of Vermont is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the institution's information technology strategy and operations. Reporting directly to the president, the CIO will collaborate with senior leaders to ensure that IT services align with the university's mission and goals. The role involves developing a vision for IT, managing a diverse team, and ensuring the delivery of high-quality IT services to students, faculty, and staff. The CIO will also be responsible for financial stewardship of the IT budget and compliance with relevant regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute the strategic direction for Enterprise Technology Services (ETS).
  • Oversee implementation of IT innovative changes, including ERP and HCM systems transitions.
  • Serve as a key member of the university's senior leadership team.
  • Foster the development of IT systems for strategic decision-making.
  • Provide superior system and end user services via an IT Shared Services model.
  • Support UVM's mission to engage students with technology.
  • Recruit, mentor, and retain a diverse team of IT leaders and staff.
  • Provide financial stewardship over the annual operating and capital budget for IT.
  • Explore and assess new technologies like AI and ML.
  • Ensure IT governance prioritizes security and compliance with laws and regulations.
  • Meet regularly with the Board of Trustees Audit Committee regarding technology issues.
  • Oversee all technology-related activities including academic and administrative services.
  • Negotiate with vendors and support partnerships with external organizations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree in computer science, information technology, business administration, or related field preferred.
  • Ten-plus years of experience in information technology, including management experience.
  • Experience in strategic planning, budget management, and financial stewardship.
  • Strong understanding of the cybersecurity threat landscape and risk management.
  • Experience in large-scale project management and technology acquisition.
  • Strong technical background with knowledge of emerging technologies.
