About the position

The Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at North Carolina Central University plays a pivotal role in the university's leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Information Officer (CIO). This position is responsible for advocating for the university's information security needs and leading the development and implementation of security initiatives. The CISO will oversee enterprise IT systems, business operations, and facility defenses against security breaches, while also auditing existing systems and managing security policies and standards.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the planning and implementation of enterprise IT systems and security initiatives.
  • Audit existing systems and direct the administration of security policies, activities, and standards.
  • Collaborate with senior administration and academic leaders to balance security strategies with other campus priorities.
  • Develop and administer an information security program including policies and procedures in a higher education environment.
  • Communicate information security-related concepts to a broad range of technical and non-technical staff.
  • Advise and collaborate with senior management on information security matters.
  • Work with Internal Audit and outside consultants to represent institutional technology systems and practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Management Information Science or related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Professional certification such as CISSP or CCISO is highly desirable.
  • Experience as an Information Security Officer in a complex higher education environment.
  • Strong leadership and consensus-building skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of technology environments, including information security and defense solutions.
  • Experience in planning and executing security policies and standards development.
  • Knowledge of COBIT, ISO, ITIL, CMS, NIST, and other standards.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience advising and collaborating with senior management.
  • Demonstrated success in working with Internal Audit and System Auditors.
  • Working knowledge of the policy and regulatory environment of information security in higher education.
