About the position

The Chief Marketing and Communications Officer at Carnegie Mellon University's School of Computer Science (SCS) is responsible for leading and executing comprehensive marketing and communication strategies that enhance the visibility and reputation of the School. This role involves collaborating with various stakeholders, including the Dean, faculty, and external partners, to develop and implement effective communication plans that align with the School's vision and the broader goals of Carnegie Mellon University. The position requires a strategic thinker with extensive experience in marketing and communications, particularly within the higher education sector.

Responsibilities

  • Define and refine key constituencies including decision makers, influencers, media, donors, and prospective students.
  • Design and implement methods to assess the team's success in achieving visibility and reputational recognition for the School.
  • Coordinate and refine brand messaging for the School and advances in computer science.
  • Align SCS marketing and communications with University Communications and Marketing and academic units within SCS.
  • Provide leadership for marketing efforts in SCS departments and support departmental communication initiatives.
  • Develop various communication vehicles and utilize key channels including media relations, public relations, and social media.
  • Coordinate web design and content strategies with relevant teams.
  • Manage relationships with external graphic design, marketing, PR, and video production resources.
  • Represent the School in University marketing and communications efforts.
  • Oversee creative direction and content creation.

Requirements

  • 10-15 years of relevant marketing and communications leadership experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field required; Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience in higher education and/or agency environment.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong team leadership and supervisory skills with experience in coaching and mentoring.
  • Strong project management proficiency.
  • Experience with a broad range of communications platforms including traditional, digital, interactive, and social media.
  • Demonstrable data analysis skills.
  • Solid technical capacity to understand and convey scientific and technical subject matter.
