About the position

The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) serves as a vital link between Physician leadership and information technology (IT) at Cook County Health (CCH). This role is pivotal in developing and managing medical information systems and tools that enhance clinical care processes. The CMIO is responsible for analyzing data to identify opportunities for improving IT functions across various clinical areas, including electronic health information systems, quality assessments of patient care, health economics, and business analytics. By partnering with Physician Leadership, the CMIO identifies technology solutions aimed at improving safety, quality, patient and family satisfaction, as well as provider and staff satisfaction, ultimately increasing efficiencies in care delivery. In this capacity, the CMIO leads change management initiatives within the provider community, fostering acceptance of new or evolving information systems. Acting as the interface with IT, the CMIO translates clinical requirements into IT system specifications, ensuring the maximization of current technology and resources. The position also involves significant administrative responsibilities, including participation in collective bargaining negotiations, documentation and execution of disciplinary actions, and contributing to the management of CCH staff and systemic development. The CMIO is tasked with driving organizational and infrastructure enhancements to improve IT systems and tools for Physicians and other Medical Staff. This includes supporting Physician leadership in navigating new processes and procedures that enhance clinical quality and patient experience. The CMIO leads the integration and enhancement of electronic health records systems, prioritizes medical information systems, and develops clinical information systems that assist in patient care and medical research. Building relationships with physicians to increase the adoption of technology systems is crucial, as is representing the IT needs of the Physician Leadership team to Hospital Leadership and IT. Additionally, the CMIO advises on regulatory and compliance impacts on information systems, develops appropriate policies, and leads the creation of data analytics to refine clinical decision support processes. The role requires a deep understanding of clinical workflows and the ability to drive change within the physician population, ensuring that technology is effectively integrated into clinical practice.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a bridge between Physician leadership and IT to develop and manage medical information systems.
  • Analyze data to identify mechanisms for improving IT functions in clinical care processes.
  • Partner with Physician Leadership to identify technology solutions that enhance safety, quality, and satisfaction.
  • Lead change management initiatives to increase acceptance of new information systems among providers.
  • Translate clinical requirements into IT system specifications to maximize technology resources.
  • Drive organizational and infrastructure enhancements to improve IT systems for medical staff.
  • Support Physician leadership in introducing new processes to improve clinical quality and patient experience.
  • Lead the integration and enhancement of electronic health records systems.
  • Set priorities for medical information systems and develop clinical information systems for patient care and research.
  • Build relationships with physicians to increase acceptance and use of technology systems.
  • Advocate for IT requirements of the Physician Leadership team with Hospital Leadership and IT.
  • Engage resources to address barriers to clinical performance.
  • Advise Leadership on regulatory and compliance impacts on information systems.
  • Lead the development of data analytics for clinical decision support.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) or Doctor of Osteopathy Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited college or university.
  • Demonstrated health informatics experience, including implementation of healthcare-related systems.
  • Five (5) years of leadership experience in a healthcare setting.

Nice-to-haves

  • Masters' Degree in Health Informatics or Health Care Administration.
  • Licensed as a Physician in the State of Illinois or ability to obtain prior to starting employment.
  • Board Certified in their specialty.
  • Ten (10) years of leadership experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Prior experience in clinical medicine.
