The Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO) plays a critical role as the bridge between Information Systems, Information Technology, Data Analytics, and UPHS clinical teams. Reporting to the SVP, Data and Technology Solutions of the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS), the CMIO will partner with clinicians, IT and Data Analytics staff, and administrators to improve overall patient and provider experience by participating in technology selection, implementation, and governance. The CMIO is expected to organize and lead a team of providers with medical informatics expertise across the system to ensure broad engagement of the medical provider community in IT and Data related systems. This role serves in a highly visible leadership capacity, working collaboratively across the enterprise and externally to design effective technology strategies that enable clinicians to deliver excellent patient care. The CMIO will also represent Penn Medicine at appropriate national venues related to medical informatics. In this position, the CMIO will evaluate organizational systems, specifically the electronic medical record (EMR), ensuring that system design changes and technical builds align with clinical needs. The CMIO will provide a clinical perspective to ensure patient care remains consistent across various systems, promoting patient safety and quality care through technology use. Additionally, the CMIO will analyze health information trends to improve applications and system quality, driving efficiency in daily operations. Ensuring that clinical teams are trained in using IS applications, particularly the EMR, and that patient data is protected is also a key responsibility. The CMIO will ensure compliance of all health information technology systems with laws, regulations, and clinical standards, while staying informed about the latest developments in healthcare technology to keep UPHS at the forefront of healthcare technology.
