The Chief Nursing Information Officer (CNIO) at UTMB Health is a pivotal role that provides strategic vision and leadership to transform healthcare delivery through the effective use of data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing and health professions practice. This position serves as the principal informatics advisor to the Chief Nursing Executive, establishing direction for a comprehensive nursing informatics program that focuses on nursing practice, administration, research, and academic partnerships to support interdisciplinary, patient-driven care. The CNIO is responsible for developing strategic nursing informatics plans, conducting data analysis, and creating policies and procedures that champion complex nursing projects and systems aimed at enhancing efficiency and effectiveness for end users, ultimately advancing evidence-based nursing practice. In collaboration with other senior leaders, including the Chief Nurse Executive, Chief Medical Information Officer, and Chief Information Officer, the CNIO drives transformational strategies that cater to the needs of diverse, interdisciplinary teams of clinicians and patients. This role encompasses a broad scope, covering UTMB hospitals and clinics, and emphasizes the importance of supporting professional practice, clinical operations, quality, and safety needs of nursing, allied health clinicians, patients, and family caregivers. The CNIO combines knowledge of patient care, informatics concepts, and change management to effectively address the information and knowledge needs of healthcare professionals and patients, promoting the safe, effective, and efficient use of health IT in clinical settings. The CNIO maintains relationships with key business partners and senior industry leaders to leverage best practices, evaluate emerging technologies, and disseminate knowledge internally to inform strategic plans. This role also involves working with vendors to strategize on the development and enhancement of clinical information system solutions that meet organizational business needs. The CNIO is tasked with developing and maintaining productive relationships with nurses, physicians, hospital administrators, IT leadership, and the UTMB School of Nursing to enhance the practice of Nursing Informatics and improve the application of technology within nursing practice. Additionally, the CNIO assesses evolving patient care delivery models, hospital operations, human resource processes, healthcare finance, and payment models, interpreting them in light of UTMB's strategic direction. The CNIO collaborates with nurse leaders to plan and implement program expansion and growth, including new business ventures and real-time health system projects. Ensuring quality improvement efforts align with informatics research, regulatory guidelines, and evidence-based practices is a critical responsibility, as is coordinating with various administrative and clinical teams to develop and implement high-quality clinical information systems that assist clinicians in delivering care. The CNIO acts as a change agent, working with nursing and clinical leadership to identify, develop, plan, implement, and measure informatics strategies that support quality patient care and professional practice. This role emphasizes the importance of technology and infrastructure in preventing medical errors and adverse events, continuously collecting and analyzing data on patient safety issues and outcomes, and leveraging predictive analytics tools to identify at-risk patients and populations.
