About the position

The Chief of Staff (COS), AMC Development, serves as a strategic advisor to the President of the Academic Medical Centers (AMC), overseeing the operations of two prestigious institutions: Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). This role is pivotal in navigating complex strategic issues, identifying potential risks, and achieving the philanthropic objectives set forth by the AMC President. The COS acts as a trusted partner and confidante, requiring a high degree of maturity, humility, and situational awareness to effectively manage sensitive and confidential matters. In this high-demand, fast-paced environment, the Chief of Staff collaborates closely with a diverse array of stakeholders, including senior leadership from both BWH and MGH Development offices, hospital and volunteer leadership, and system leaders within Mass General Brigham (MGB). The COS is responsible for ensuring that the President's time is maximized and that critical information is communicated effectively throughout the decision-making process. This includes preparing high-quality materials for executive meetings, tracking progress towards philanthropic goals, and serving as a liaison to various development offices to foster alignment and engagement with key stakeholders. The COS also plays a crucial role in problem-solving and decision-making, assisting in the execution of the President's vision for philanthropy and ensuring that the President is well-prepared for development-related meetings and travel. This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills, strong strategic thinking abilities, and a commitment to ethical standards and personal integrity. The Chief of Staff will manage one direct report and oversee various operational responsibilities, ensuring that the President's Development-related calendar aligns with institutional priorities.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a strategic partner to the President on all organizational matters related to philanthropy and with a focus on key priorities.
  • Assist with strategy, development, definition, and execution of the President's vision as it relates to philanthropy at BWH and MGH.
  • Assist in collaborative problem-solving and decision-making between the BWH and MGH Development Offices on behalf of the AMC President.
  • Track progress to philanthropic goals and implement tactics to achieve forward progress.
  • Serve as an 'air traffic controller' for the President, maximizing the President's limited time and ensuring information arrives at the right point in the decision-making process.
  • Brief the President for Development-related meetings and proactively review the calendar with the Office of the President team.
  • Produce high quality materials for executive meetings that convey messages effectively to internal and external audiences.
  • Serve as a liaison to the BWH and MGH Development Offices to create alignment across both institutions.
  • Identify which prospect relationships are most important to the success of the President's Development-related agenda.
  • Staff the President on Development-related travel as needed.
  • Collaborate with MGB Communications leaders to ensure that the BWH and MGH Development Offices are informed of institutional announcements in advance.
  • Collaborate with peers across MGB with a focus on the central system and the academic medical center.
  • Serve as the President's representative for appropriate Development-related institutional programs as necessary.
  • Triage issues, mitigate scheduling demands, and prioritize critical issues.
  • Oversee responsibilities related to the President's interactions with the philanthropic community in coordination with the BWH and MGH Development Offices.
  • Manage one direct report who will assist with ongoing operations and ensure alignment with the AMC President's priorities.
  • Act as a truth-teller when the President needs a wide-ranging view without a political agenda.
  • Other duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; master's degree (MHA, JD, MBA, MPH) preferred.
  • More than 6 years of Development and executive experience.
  • Proven track record of successful management, leadership, and decision-making in a highly matrixed and collaborative organizational environment.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and strong managerial ability.

  • High intellectual capacity, sound professional judgment, and discretion to lead in complex, changing, and ambiguous environments.
