About the position

The Chief of Staff (CoS) is a pivotal leadership role within the Cedar Rapids Community School District, responsible for supporting the Superintendent of Schools and the Board of Education in driving strategic initiatives, managing organizational operations, and fostering effective stakeholder engagement. The CoS serves as a liaison and primary advisor to the Superintendent and Board, overseeing Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Belonging, and Fairness (DEIBF) initiatives, leadership development, crisis management, and other projects as assigned. This role requires exceptional organizational, communication, and leadership skills, thriving in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Superintendent and Board in driving strategic initiatives and managing organizational operations.
  • Act as a liaison between the Superintendent and various stakeholders, ensuring clear communication and effective collaboration.
  • Oversee the execution and management of the District's strategic plan, including annual needs analysis.
  • Manage media relations and serve as the spokesperson for the Superintendent and the District when necessary.
  • Coordinate partnerships and community engagement opportunities, including organizing Community, Student, and Teacher Cabinets.
  • Attend all Board of Education meetings, collaborating with the Board to manage protocols and ensure compliance with guidelines.
  • Organize District-wide events for the Superintendent and Board based on strategic priorities.
  • Serve as the lead representative for the Superintendent during crisis events, ensuring coordinated responses.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the District's DEIBF plan, ensuring alignment with strategic goals.
  • Develop annual legislative priorities and liaise with legislators to advance the District's agenda.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, Legal Affairs, Educational Leadership, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of leadership experience in a K-12 school District or large, complex organization.
  • High-level project management skills and proficiency with project management tools and technology.
  • In-depth knowledge of Iowa Education Law and Open Meetings/Public Records.
  • Exceptional communication and leadership abilities, with high emotional intelligence and crisis management skills.
