About the position

The Chief of Staff at the Maryland Insurance Administration (MIA) plays a crucial role in strategizing, consulting, and implementing public policy initiatives. This position involves collaboration with senior staff and the Commissioner to direct resources, set priorities, and oversee the development of policy initiatives. The Chief of Staff acts on behalf of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner, ensuring alignment with the Administration's goals and managing the progression of tasks and projects within the agency.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategist, consultant, and implementer of public policy initiatives.
  • Facilitate collaboration and communication across the Administration.
  • Direct resources and time, and set priorities for strategies, policies, and procedures.
  • Act on behalf of the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner to steer key initiatives from conception to completion.
  • Represent the agency in inter-agency and external workgroups and communications.
  • Drive decision-making processes to ensure rapid response and alignment with Administration goals.
  • Prepare recommended policy actions for the Commissioner's approval.
  • Oversee development of policy initiatives and manage short and long-range plans for program operations and resources.
  • Track progress on MIA activities pertaining to the advancement of strategic plans.
  • Assign work, monitor progression and completion of tasks/projects, and provide employee training.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Political Science, Public Policy, Public Administration, Business Administration, Management or related field.
  • Seven years of administrative staff or professional work experience, with three years involving analyzing, researching, evaluating, developing and/or implementing policies.
