About the position

The Chief of Staff for the School of Music at the University of Minnesota is a key administrative role responsible for supporting the Director and enhancing the school's academic and community-driven mission. This position involves overseeing various operational aspects, including strategic planning, financial management, human resources, and student services. The Chief of Staff serves as a primary resource for faculty and staff on university policies and procedures, mediates disputes, and manages accreditation needs, ensuring the effective functioning of the School of Music.

Responsibilities

  • Set strategic planning priorities in coordination with the Director to optimize SOM resources.
  • Support the development of new initiatives and realignment of existing programs and projects.
  • Serve as a liaison on behalf of the Director, faculty, staff, and students with external entities.
  • Coordinate data collection for internal and external surveys and develop communication strategies.
  • Manage and coordinate SOM external reviews, including accreditation and academic program reviews.
  • Provide financial oversight of Ted Mann Concert Hall operations and budgeting.
  • Supervise civil service, labor represented, and P&A personnel, including performance assessments and staff management.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures for daily operations.
  • Manage fiscal activities including budgeting, expenditures, and forecasting.
  • Oversee Student Services operations and lead annual curriculum planning.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree and 8 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Prior oversight of a small department or cross-disciplinary team within a large institution.
  • Experience supervising staff and managing budgets.
  • Project management experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience working with faculty, staff, students, and administrators in higher education.
  • Working knowledge of the academic fields of music or related disciplines.
