About the position

The Chief of Staff & Strategy at the Museum of the City of New York plays a pivotal role in fostering understanding of urban life in one of the world's most influential cities. This position is designed for a dynamic and strategic leader who will be an integral part of the Executive team, responsible for leading special projects, strategic planning, and new business initiatives. The Chief of Staff will facilitate coordination and communication across various departments, ensuring that institutional goals are aligned and effectively communicated. This role also involves representing the Museum as a member of its leadership team, engaging with stakeholders, and overseeing critical relationships with the Board of Trustees and city officials. The Chief of Staff will lead strategic planning initiatives, analyze operations, and identify business development opportunities. This includes providing research to inform strategy, investment, and budgeting, as well as monitoring progress towards established goals. The position requires the ability to lead matrix teams to launch various initiatives, including real estate and technology projects, while ensuring mission alignment and feasibility. The Chief of Staff will also oversee cross-departmental communication, identify tools to improve workflow, and foster collaboration among staff members. In addition to project management and strategic planning, the Chief of Staff will act as the primary liaison for the City of New York, representing the Museum at meetings and events, and interfacing with city officials. This role requires a strong commitment to the Museum's mission, with responsibilities that include preparing materials for the Board, engaging with community partners, and leading culture-building activities within the institution. The ideal candidate will have a passion for the arts and culture sector, a deep understanding of the role museums play in society, and a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Responsibilities

  • Lead strategic planning initiatives and oversee consulting relationships.
  • Analyze operations and business development opportunities; provide research to inform strategy, investment, and budgeting.
  • Monitor progress towards goals and budgets; create and provide updates for the Board of Trustees and management team.
  • Lead matrix teams to launch real estate, capital, technology, business, and other initiatives requiring cross-departmental collaboration.
  • Evaluate projects for mission alignment and feasibility; identify, select, and steward partners; develop timelines and budgets.
  • Oversee Board of Trustees relations and staff the Executive, Nominating, Real Estate, and Governance Committees.
  • Prepare materials and presentations for the Board and funders; foster relationships with Board Members, donors, staff, and community partners.
  • Act as the primary liaison for the City of New York and Cultural Institutions Group; represent MCNY at City meetings and events.
  • Coordinate cross-departmental collaboration and identify tools to improve workflow.
  • Oversee staff meetings and presentations; lead culture-building activities for the institution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree; a Master's degree in a related field is preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in for-profit or non-profit strategy, with a proven track record of implementation of operations and execution of strategy.
  • Experience in a cultural institution or adjacent for-profit strategy position preferred.
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to motivate and inspire a team.
  • Proven experience in building and maintaining relationships with internal teams, board members, and other stakeholders.
  • Exceptional analytical skills with the ability to assess complex situations and develop strategic solutions.
