About the position

The Chief of Staff at the California State University, Office of the Chancellor, plays a pivotal role in providing high-level strategic advising and direction to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) of Academic and Student Affairs. This position is essential for ensuring that the priorities, goals, and objectives of the CSU system are met effectively. The Chief of Staff will serve as the principal advisor on policy development and will collaborate closely with division leadership to shape strategic priorities. This role requires a deep understanding of the academic and student affairs landscape, as well as the ability to navigate complex relationships with various stakeholders, including university presidents, provosts, and state officials. The Chief of Staff will be responsible for monitoring and ensuring the effective resolution of projects assigned to the division by various governing bodies, including the Trustees and the Governor. This includes leading and executing projects in collaboration with senior staff, managing executive functions, and ensuring that the DVC is well-prepared for meetings and decision-making processes. The position also involves conducting research, analyzing information, and developing high-level correspondence and reports that require discretion and sound judgment. In addition to strategic advising, the Chief of Staff will provide leadership and guidance to the division, anticipating developments in academic and student affairs, and proposing strategies to address emerging challenges. The role includes overseeing Board of Trustees activities, managing communications, and ensuring that the division's initiatives align with the broader goals of the CSU system. The Chief of Staff will also represent the DVC in various settings, facilitating collaboration and communication across departments and campuses. This position is approved for telecommuting, allowing for a flexible work environment while maintaining a strong presence at the main headquarters in Long Beach, California.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as principal advisor to the Deputy Vice Chancellor on academic and student affairs matters.
  • Support the DVC by managing projects assigned to Academic and Student Affairs from the Trustees, Governor, Legislature, or Chancellor.
  • Lead and execute projects in collaboration with other senior ASA staff.
  • Ensure the DVC is optimally prepared for meetings and executive functions.
  • Research, analyze, and interpret information for the DVC.
  • Manage and coordinate special projects and initiatives, including research and evaluation.
  • Develop, prepare, and review high-level correspondence and reports.
  • Serve as the DVC liaison to various stakeholders, including Presidents and Provosts.
  • Anticipate systemwide academic and student affairs developments and propose strategies.
  • Oversee activities related to Board of Trustees meetings and track issues raised by Trustees.

Requirements

  • Earned baccalaureate degree from an accredited four-year college or university; or an equivalent combination of education and 10 years related experience.
  • A minimum of 7 years of high-level project or program management experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible experience working for a high-level executive in a complex work environment.
  • Experience working in a higher education environment is required.
  • Strong project management experience, including developing or managing projects and initiatives.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Strong problem-solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituents.

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate degree from an accredited university is highly preferred.
  • Experience working in academic affairs and student affairs is highly preferred.
