About the position

The City of Rochester Hills is seeking a Chief of Staff to the Mayor, a pivotal role responsible for coordinating city operations, managing strategic projects, and representing the Mayor's Office to various stakeholders. This position requires exceptional interpersonal skills and a collaborative approach to leadership, aimed at advancing the city's strategic plan and ensuring alignment with its mission and goals.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises staff, prioritizing and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, and maintaining high operational standards.
  • Serves as the primary liaison for the Mayor's Office, representing the Mayor in interactions with stakeholders.
  • Ensures accurate and timely flow of information to and from the Mayor's Office.
  • Builds and maintains positive working relationships with community organizations, businesses, and governmental agencies.
  • Works directly with department directors on day-to-day issues and special projects.
  • Provides status updates to the Mayor and participates in management staff meetings.
  • Addresses public inquiries and concerns, resolving issues or referring them appropriately.
  • Develops and supports grant and fundraising efforts for the department.
  • Participates in recruitment processes and oversees staff orientation and training.
  • Coordinates community events and initiatives, including the annual State of the City address.
  • Prepares and reviews speeches, presentations, and other communications for the Mayor.
  • Reviews City Council agendas and briefs the Mayor on important topics.
  • Identifies and supports public and private sector partnerships for special projects.
  • Assists with the preparation of the Mayor's Office budget and tracks spending.
  • Attends City Council meetings, providing information and support to the Mayor.
  • Reviews pending legislation and evaluates its effects on City operations.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in business administration, public administration, political science, or a closely related field.
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience in public administration or a senior-level role.
  • Four years of experience in a leadership or managerial role.
